I’m sorry you’re having issues with the app! Read through the problems below and if they don’t help with your problem, please email me. To prevent spam, please use the email address below after you follow the included steps.

  1. solve the math problems in parentheses
  2. replace the bracketed items with the appropriate punctuation
  3. remove all spaces

Yes, it’s annoying to have to do all that, but spam is annoying too. And if I get too much of it, your email will get lost in it!

The app is crashing!

Oh no! Please email me and let me know what you were doing when it crashed!

If it crashes as soon as you open it, there are a few things you can try.

  1. Force quit the Bloom app and open it again
  2. Restart your device
  3. Delete the app and reinstall it

This last step will cause all saved progress in your games to be lost. So if you’d rather not lose that progress, ignore step 3 and just email me with your problem. I will try to update the app with a fix as soon as possible.

I’m stuck!

If you’re stuck, just wait! A hint should automatically show up if you haven’t entered any letters for 30 seconds.

You can control this behavior in the main gameplay settings page, by tapping the “gear” icon on the screen that shows you the daily games. You can also set the game’s default difficulty here – you’ll only have to enter words of the specified difficulty to progress to the next level.

Why won’t it accept this word?

I’m using a common word game dictionary to determine what constitutes a “word.” Proper nouns, acronyms, and contractions are not accepted.

I am excluding certain words that are common triggers for victims of trauma or abuse, as well as racial slurs. If you think I’ve made a mistake and inadvertently included a word like this, please let me know.

I’m not excluding anatomical terms, and I’m not excluding vulgarity generally. I don’t fucking care about that, and I don’t think you should either.

How are you deciding on word difficulty?

In Bloom, there are three difficulty settings: Easy, Medium, and Hard. All the words in every puzzle are assigned one of these difficulties.

I do this based entirely on my gut. Generally, Easy words are ones that everyone knows, Medium ones are more uncommon words that most people know, and Hard words are very uncommon words that are typically technical jargon and archaic words.

However, I’ll sometimes bump a word up to a harder difficulty if it’s long or hard to guess, even if it’s fairly common. For example, given the letters D E O R, I might bump the word “REORDERED” to a medium word, not because I think people don’t know it, but because it’s hard to see that long word in those four letters. I’m especially likely to do this on an easier Monday or Tuesday puzzle, because I want those puzzles to be easier and more accessible to everybody. But I’m less likely to do this on a Friday or Saturday. So a given word might be a different difficulty on a different day.
